In 2002, after co-directing with Park Players for two years, Miss McNutt began an after school acting class and Drama Club at Canton High in the DuBois Little Theatre. PCEP's enrollment continued to grow and the Theatre program was developing to the point where there simply was not enough opportunities for students to be involved in theatre---either onstage or backstage. With a desire to further develop our theatre arts program and a greater desire to create twice as many performance opportunities for our students --- The Second Stage Players was born (see note).

In 2004, Miss McNutt started The Second Stage Players with her credit card, a very old dimmer (lighting) system donated by Spotlight Players and $1,000.00 from Park Players. Well, we're still using the old dimmer system, but we are growing! Through grants and donations, we have been able to make many behind-the-scenes improvements; however, we still have a long way to go. We will keep working hard each year to raise money to improve the theatre, purchase theatrical equipment, and raise money for production costs. We are beginning our 6th season this year and we continue to maintain and develop a professional production model that encourages and nurtures talent, passion, discipline, friendship, and fun! We are the "little theatre" that produces "Big Shows".

Second Stage Players is open to all PCEP students who have a passion for theatre. No experience is necessary! Regardless of whether students attend Canton, Salem or Plymouth, or what grade they are in --- all students are welcome and encouraged to be part of this exciting and magical experience. Most Second Stage Players, both past and present, regard theatre to be their favorite high school experience. While many students join SSP to make friends, find a place to belong, have fun, or simply to try something new --- many students join to be able to pursue their dream of a career in theatre, or the entertainment industry. In the short amount of time that SSP has produced shows, many alumni are currently attending notable professional theatre training programs.

Note: Second Stage Players also owes its roots to the dedication, prodding, pushing, pleading and threats of two alumni who knew they would never benefit from this program, as it was started the year after they graduated. We will always be grateful to you Deborah Dolney and Katelyn Sigworth.
